Elder Financial Abuse: The Invisible Epidemic…Anatomy of the Astor Trial
Featuring Elizabeth Loewy, lead prosecutor on the Astor trial and Clark investigation, founding Chief of the Elder Abuse Unit of the New York County District Attorney’s Office, and Louis W. Pierro, founder and principal of the Pierro Law Group
Elder financial abuse is a crime affecting thousands of frail and elderly people in the US, with a huge financial and social cost. Most cases go unreported, hidden by fear and shame. Spend 90 minutes with Liz Loewy and Lou Pierro, and hear details regarding how a son’s web of deceit and greed against a victim who was in the throes of advanced Alzheimer’s disease led to larceny and fraud convictions. This presentation will also focus on ways in which older Americans and caregivers can help prevent fraud and abuse by using common tools such as guardianship, powers of attorney, revocable trusts, and how to create a family fortress for clients by utilizing sophisticated technology and modern trust design under Delaware law.
Ms. Loewy, is the Founding Chief of the Elder Abuse Unit of the New York County District Attorney’s Office. During her 30 year tenure at the ADA, Ms. Loewy was in charge of the Domestic Violence Unit and responsible for overseeing the investigation and prosecution of approximately 800 elder abuse cases annually. In her new capacity, Ms. Loewy is now General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Industry Relations at EverSafe. EverSafe is a technology service designed to protect older Americans against financial exploitation. Ms. Loewy holds a JD from Albany Law School of Union University and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.
